The impact of climate change on allergies, hay fever and sinusitis:
Why do you sniffle and sneeze?
Pollen is released and blown around during the reproduction of trees and other plants.
Pollen is seen as a foreign object to the body’s defence system, causing the immune system to launch an attack in order to remove pollen and its effects from the body by releasing chemicals in your nose. This results in the familiar symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, headache, a stuffy nose and feeling congested.
This is called an allergy.
Climate change plays a significant role in allergies. Climate change is responsible for higher temperatures, change in precipitation patterns and CO2 levels, causing plants to grow at a more vigorous pace.
Higher pollen counts released for longer periods (longer pollen seasons) of time from these plants are responsible for more severe allergies and health effects. Pollen not only affects people that are already struggling with allergies.
Due to increased pollen for extended periods, non-allergic people are also being exposed to allergens. This may eventually sensitise them to allergens and cause symptoms whereas the symptoms in people with established pollen allergies, will intensify.
What season is responsible for your allergies?
Pollen responsible for allergies or allergic rhinitis are different from season to season. They can also occur all year-round.
Allergic reactions during summer are normally due to grass pollen. In spring, trees are the main producers of pollen while weeds are prominent during early Autumn.
Common ways to deal with pollen allergies
Ways to help prevent allergic reactions to pollen:
Practising good personal hygiene (like frequently washing hands etc.)
Keeping windows closed during summer and spring
Spending time outside when pollen counts are lower (after rain showers)
