How to sleep with a blocked nose: Tips for a restful night’s rest

There’s nothing more frustrating than settling into bed, only to realise you can’t breathe through your nose. A blocked nose can make it hard to fall or stay asleep leaving you feeling poorly rested the next day. While nighttime congestion can appear at any time, winter with its cold weather and common viral infections, mean congestion is often more common.

If you’re struggling with nasal congestion at night, you’re not alone. This frustrating occurrence bugs many people, leaving them to search for a solution. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to help ease congestion and get the good night’s sleep you have been looking for.

Why does my nose get blocked at night?

There are many reasons you may get a blocked nose at night, including everything from allergies to nasal polyps and sleep apnea.

But, if you mainly experience this problem when you are sick, there is one fairly simple reason as to why your nose tends to feel more congested when you go to bed – gravity. You likely spend most of your day upright, allowing gravity to help move excess mucus away from your nose and sinuses. When you lie down in the evening, gravity can no longer help in draining the mucus, making it more difficult to drain. This change can be especially noticeable if you tend to lie flat on your back.

Nasal congestion also often worsens when lying down due to increased blood flow to the nasal passages. This increase in blood flow can cause the mucus to pool in your nasal passage. This in turn can create pressure and lead to inflammation and swelling, giving you the feeling of being congested.

Treatment for a blocked nose at night

Knowing the cause is the first step in figuring out a treatment for a blocked nose at night. In cases where it is caused by excess mucus and inflammation in the nose, the following steps can make a big difference.

Elevate your head

Since lying flat can cause mucus to pool and nasal passages to swell, try elevating your head with a few extra pillows. Propping your head up with some pillows can help mucus drain and relieve some of the pressure in your sinuses.

Use a nasal decongestant

Using a nasal decongestant like Sinucon Nasal Drops before bed can make a big difference when it comes to relieving a blocked nose at night. Sinucon nasal drops are applied directly into the nose, providing fast and lasting relief from nasal congestion and swelling so you can get a good night’s sleep. These drops are available over the counter at all Clicks, Dis-Chem, and independent pharmacies.

Run a humidifier

Winter air is notoriously dry, especially indoors when heaters are running. Dry air can irritate your airways and make congestion worse. A humidifier adds moisture back into the air, helping to soothe your airway and loosen mucus and make breathing easier. Taking a steamy bath or shower before bed is also a good idea if you do not have a humidifier.

Stay hydrated

When you are sick, mucus can become thick and sticky, making it hard for your body to clear and worsening congestion. Drinking enough fluids helps thin mucus, making it easier for your body to clear it out. Warm drinks such as herbal teas can be especially comforting during winter and help clear excess mucus.

Use a saline rinse

A gentle saline rinse can help improve congestion, leaving your nasal passage feeling clearer. Use a sterile saline spray or rinse an hour before bed, then follow up with Sinucon nasal drops for the ultimate blocked nose fighting combo. It is important to make sure you do the rinse before using nasal drops.

A blocked nose at night can leave you tossing and turning and feeling tired the next day. Simple steps like elevating your head, running a humidifier, staying hydrated, and using a saline rinse can help ease congestion.

For quick and long-lasting relief, Sinucon Nasal Drops work directly in the nose to reduce swelling and help you breathe more easily before bed. With the right approach, you can enjoy clearer breathing and a more restful night’s sleep.
